Description

CSTYPE is a Census Bureau recode that describes the type of agreement according to the questions regarding legal or informal child support arrangements. This variable is found on the parent record (see variable CSLEGAL for comparable variable on the child’s record).

Blank values for this variable represent individuals who were not interviewed in April of the sample year.

This variable is part of the Child Support Supplement.

Comparability

This variable is comparable across all available years, except that the 2000 and 2002 samples do not differentiate between blank and NIU observations. In all other samples, 99 strictly means not in universe.
