Description

CSOUT identifies children with a biological parent who lives outside the household. This variable is found on the child record for all years other than 1992, when the variable is found on the parent record.

Blank values for this variable represent individuals who were not interviewed in April of the sample year.

Users should note that some children will be NIU for CSOUT but other variables regarding child support on their record or the parent record will have valid values. In some cases, this is a result of the single parent remarrying but still receiving support from the other biological parent.

This variable is part of the Child Support Supplement.

Comparability

In 1992, the question for CSOUT asks if the adult has a child in the household less than 21 years old who has a parent living elsewhere. In samples 1994 and onward, the respondents were asked to answer for children whether or not the child had a parent who lived outside the household.

Universe

  • [list: Adults with own or adopted children in the household.
  • 1994+: All persons eligible for the Child Support supplement.
