Description

DPTYPLY indicates whether a direct-purchase private insurance plan covered only the policyholder or also covered dependents, during the previous calendar year. Policyholders of direct-purchased insurance are identified in the DPOWNLY variable. Persons who had coverage from such a plan as dependents of a policyholder last year are identified in the DPDEPLY variable. Whether the policyholder's direct-purchase insurance covered someone living in another household is reported in DPOUTLY.

Comparability

This variable is comparable across years.

Beginning in 2019, a new category is added for plans that cover the policyholder and one other person. Prior to 2019, these records had been included under family plans.

Universe

  • Persons 15+ who were policyholders of direct-purchase insurance during the previous calendar year.
