Description

FAMKIND indicates the type of family that a person belongs to. FAMKIND refers to Census-defined family units, which do not necessarily correspond to the IPUMS-derived family units as specified in FAMUNIT. See FTYPE and FAMREL for more on Census family units.

Comparability

This variable is comparable across years. Prior to 1998, code 2 was "Other male head" or "Other male reference person". The use of the code, however, is the same.
