Description
JTIND reports the industry of the job the respondent worked one year ago.
This variable is part of the Job Tenure Supplement.
Comparability
The industry coding scheme for the CPS changed over time, and JTIND gives the responses in the coding scheme currently used for the sample year. For an industry variable that is comparable over time, see JTIND1990.
Starting in 2012, the number of cases that have "not reported" codes (9990) is much larger than previous years.
After 1996, the universe includes employed individuals aged 15 and older; prior to 1996, employed individuals aged 14 and older are included.
Universe
- Jan 1983 and Jan 1987: Civilians age 14 or older who were employed in the reference week and one year ago who were doing a different kind of work one year ago.
- 1996+: Civilians age 15 or older who were employed in the reference week.
- 2000+: Civilians age 15 or older who were employed in the reference week and were doing a different kind of work a year ago.
