Description

FSWIC indicates how many eligible children or women in the household received food through the WIC program in the past 30 days. This variable is available only in households with children under the age of 5 or women ages 15-45.

This variable is part of the Food Security Supplement.

Comparability

This variable is comparable in available years. In all years, the top-coded value is 4.

The universe for this variable changes over time. Between 1995 and 1999, this question is asked only of households with incomes below 185% of poverty. From 2000 forward, higher income households that reported running short of money for food (FSSHORT) are also included in the universe.

Universe

  • 1995-1999: Households below 185% poverty that have a member under the age of 5 or a female between ages 15-45
  • 2000+: Households below 185% poverty or that ran short of money for food in the past year, that have a member under the age of 5 or a female between ages 15-45
  • Apr 2001: Households in months-in-sample 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8 that are below 185% poverty or that ran short of money for food in the past year, that have a member under the age of 5 or a female between ages 15-45
  • 2022: Households below 185% poverty, or that ran short of money and tried to make their food/food money go further in the last year, or indicated they often or sometimes do not have enough to eat or have enough but not the kind of food they want to eat, and have a member between the ages of 0-4 or a female between the ages of 15-45.
