Limitations of the data and conditions of use

No fees may be charged for use or distribution of the data

All persons are granted a limited license to use and distribute these data, but you may not charge a fee for the data if you distribute it to others.

Cite the IPUMS-CPS appropriately

Publications and research reports based on the database must cite it appropriately. For information on the proper citation, refer to the page Citation and use.

The IPUMS-CPS database is not well-suited to genealogical research. The IPUMS-CPS Data Extraction System is limited in that you cannot search for names.

IPUMS-CPS cannot be used to study small geographic areas

The smallest geographical areas identified in the CPS are states and metropolitan areas.

This system provides individual-level data only

The IPUMS-CPS Data Extraction System will not produce tables. You will need to use a statistical software package, such as SPSS, SAS, or Stata, to analyze the data.
